DARA – Nedei

Welcome back everyone,

Did you really think Music Monday wasn’t going to make a comeback? Of course, it is here to stay and today I will share music from my homeland.

I am from Bulgaria and I don’t listen to Bulgarian music too much or at all, that was the case when I living in Bulgaria too. However, I recently began researching Bulgaria music because I wanted to find something upbeat and new. I listen to a lot of KPOP, so I thought there has to be Bulgaria music I’ll love.

One day I discovered a Bulgarian Youtuber, Emil Conrad, and he shared a song by DARA. I checked it out and I am proud to say I officially have a Bulgarian singer on my playlist.

DARA (Darina Yotova).

Darina Yotova, also known by her stage name, Dara, is born on September 9, 1998, in Varna, Bulgaria. She gained her popularity from the Bulgarian Edition of the X Factor. She is now signed under Virginia Records and in 2016 she released her debut song, ‘Kvo Ne Chu”, translated as “What Didn’t You Hear”.

But this is not the song I will be talking about today, I would like to introduce to you DARA’s new single, “Nedei” translated to “Don’t”. She may be the first Bulgarian artist who will put Bulgarian music on the map and I am happy it’s not the chalga genre. It is a unique music genre in Bulgaria that I dislike, but her music is a mix of pop, R&B and synthpop.

From the start of the song, it has a very upbeat an catchy tune and it leads into the song naturally. The melody is memorable and melodious, it’ll make you hum and sing it throughout the day. The song will not be complete without Dara’s expressive, dynamic and soulful vocals. Her vocal tone is strong and it makes you feel the emotions she’s feeling throughout the song.

The lyrics tell a story about longing for a lover who is no longer in your life, with the possibility of meeting each other one day. Below you will find the Bulgarian lyrics and English lyrics.

Bulgarian Lyrics

English Lyrics
Don’t change yourself, yourself
Do you give promises, do you give them?
But I don’t forget- I miss you, I miss you.
Don’t close your heart,
Your heart.
Don’t, don’t
Maybe you and I someday will meet.
Maybe, maybe someday we will meet.
These drops on my face are not tears.
I will be okay, believe me, don’t think of me.
Don’t say anything, eyes tell, they tell everything.
One thing I beg, don’t forget me!
Don’t, don’t.
Don’t, don’t
Maybe you and I someday will meet.
Maybe, maybe someday we will meet.
Аt home there’s still your things.
I hide the smells of you with aromatic candles.
Everything is alright, mistakes will become funny.
Is it wrong, that I like these sweet mistakes?
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t…
Maybe you and I will meet someday.
Maybe, maybe someday we will meet.
Maybe you and I, you you you and I…
You and I…
Maybe you and I, you you you and I…
Someday, someday…
The song is very catchy and the lyrics will be stuck in your head for a while, but the lyrics are repetitive. Nevertheless, I really like the song and Dara is like a breath of fresh air for the Bulgarian music scene. She has the potential to take her career overseas, she already has catchy songs. Who knows maybe her next single will put Bulgarian music on the map and that would be really cool.
Thank you so much for reading, I will have a new song review coming up tomorrow so stay tuned.
See you soon 🙂

Indie Tuesdays! MaJLo – Worry.

Welcome back everyone, and happy Tuesday!

I would like to introduce to you a new segment I added to my blog and it is called “Indie Tuesdays”.

This summer I have started to listen to many Indie artists because mainstream music has become very dull for me and I needed to find something different. There are so many talented artists out there and I want to put the spotlight on them by sharing their music with you all.

Today I would like to introduce the very first Indie artist I’ve listened to, his music is amazing. His name is MaJLo who is Polish music producer, instrumentalist, and singer. The three genres of music he focuses on are the alternative, electronic music, and pop. In addition to all this, he is also the co-founder of the independent music label, Sounddict.

The first song I heard from him was “Worry”. One day I was searching for relaxing morning playlist on Youtube, I came across one with Indie songs and his song was part of the playlist. I ultimately fell in love with the lyrics and melody. The melody of this song is calm, peaceful and yet nostalgic. It makes you think of a place you loved and you relive those wonderful memories in your mind.

The lyrics of the song can mean many things to people, the words that won me over were:

“I don’t know how it felt to just be me. I feel, I’m losin’ space”

This year was very challenging for me, from dealing with health problems to precious friendships ending. I felt as if this song described how I felt, I didn’t know how to feel happy I felt like I was losing myself. This is what these words meant to me.

From listening to the lyrics and reading them, I believe this song is about the desire to feel accepted and have someone appreciate who you are as a person. There is a sense of sadness and peace into one, the melody and guitar work fit well together too. It’s interesting how lyrics can perfectly describe how we feel, there is a sense of peace when you find something that speaks to your heart. This is what this song is for me.

Listen to the song and come back to tell me what you think of it in the comments section.

Thank you so much for reading and see you soon!

Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do

Wow, ok so I realize this post is late but life got a bit crazy and I couldn’t post on a regular basis. Nevertheless, let’s begin.

Taylor Swift knows how to get the public talking and looking forward to her new music. On August 18, 2017, she deleted everything from her social media accounts i.e. Instagram, Twitter and now posts on Facebook after 2015. I am not a Swifty, so I did not care for the hype too much. However, I did think this was a clever marketing strategy to get people talking and anticipate her next move.

On August 24, 2017, she released the lyrics version of her new single “Look At What You Made Me Do”, with a very different vibe from her typical music style. Can you imagine a dark/edgy Taylor? Well, you better start because she is here and according to the lyrics of her new single, the old Taylor is gone.

Even though I am not a Swiftie, I respect Taylor as an artist because she does it well and she knows what she’s doing. I applaud her for evolving and trying out different genres and reinventing herself. Some people are giving her hate for not being the country Taylor we all know, but I love the change. People aren’t meant to stay the same, change is part of life. If you guys don’t like the new Taylor, you can leave and find another musician to admire.

Now back to the music video, I think all of us has seen it by now so I won’t go over it in too much detail. I love the cinematography, the first scene of Taylor emerging from the ground as a zombie symbolizes her return to the music scene. After the Kanye drama, Taylor went on a mini hiatus but little did we know she was coming back stronger than ever. My other favorite scene is when Taylor is with the other versions of herself and battling with them. I am not sure what it means exactly but to me symbolizes letting go of your past selves. Finally, we see Taylor making fun of herself about all of the things she was criticized about in the past.

As for the song, I really like it but the chorus disappointed me. I was expecting it would be a bit more upbeat because there was a build up in the pre-chorus part. To me, the chorus felt kind of flat and repetitive, however, I love the rest of the song. I just wish the chorus was more powerful.

I am sincerely looking forward to the release of her new album, you bet I will be reviewing it.

Thank you so much for reading.

See you soon!

Rest In Peace, Chester❤

It was July 20, 2017 and I walking around downtown Edmonton, while I was on vacation leaving for Jasper, Alberta the next day. I scroll through my Instagram and I suddenly see the headline, “RIP Chester”.

In absolute shock and disbelief, I type into Google ‘Chester Bennington’, maybe it’s the wrong Chester. Nope, I read again the headlines and I burst into tears. I never cry for celebrity deaths because I don’t have any personal connection to these people, but Chester was different. He is the reason why I fell in love with rock music, because of his music I got through high school. He got a lot of teenagers of my generation through rough times. I have never been to a Linkin Park concert and I dreamed of the day I will see them perform on stage. The news were heartbreaking for me, I simply couldn’t believe it.

For those of you who have not heard of Linkin Park or Chester, Chester is the lead singer of the rock band Linkin Park. Chester had powerful vocals that touched your soul, I personally feel like no one else can compare to him. Chester’s road to success wasn’t always easy, there were countless rejections from record label companies. In his early days, Chester was was part of a band called “Grey Daze” (1993), the band recorded three albums but in 1998 he left the band. It was struggle for him to find another band after leaving Grey Daze, however, Jeff Blue, now a vice president of A&R at Warner Bros., intervened to help the band sign with Warner Bros. Records. On October 24 2000, Linkin Park released their debut album “Hybrid Theory”

As a side project in 2005, Bennington formed another bad as a side project called Dead By Sunrise, their debut album was released on October 13, 2009. According to online articles, . He worked on new material with Stone Temple Pilots in 2013 to release the EP High Rise on October 8, 2013, via their own record label, Play Pen.

To me he was one of the greatest vocalists in the rock music world, his vocals had so much emotion, a really distinct voice that cannot be forgotten.

Thank you Chester for existing and sharing your talent! You are missed so much! Please continue to support Linkin Park, I know one day they will come back, so when they do we will there waiting for them.

Thank you for reading and see you soon!

Girls’ Generation 10th Anniversary!

Hello everyone,

As promised, I am back with more music posts and today’s post will be about Girls’ Generation, also known as SNSD.

SNSD are a South Korean girl group who debuted on August 5, 2007 with their single “Into The New World”. The group has a long and successful career, however, that wasn’t always the case. In South Korea, boy bands were more dominant in the music scene at that time. When SNSD debuted, there were of course fans who cheered them on but in the beginning they were mistreated by the public. When the members attended a talk show in 2014, there talked about the famous “black ocean” moment from 2008. One thing you should know about Kpop fandoms is that they have a special colour and at their concerts fans hold up these lightsticks. For example, SNSD’s colour is ‘pink’, however, at that time as a form of protest the audience didn’t hold up their lightsticks or cheer for them.

The girls said this was upsetting for them, but they kept going! In 2009, they released their hit single, “Gee”, which was in a way a big breakthrough in their career. Their career skyrocketed from there and now they are known as the ‘Nation’s Girl Group’. Impressive, isn’t it?

SNSD had their ups and downs throughout the years, the biggest down was the departure of Jessica Jung in 2014. This was a big change for fans and the girls too, but SNSD and Jessica Jung seemed to have moved on and both parties have a successful career.

To celebrate their 10th anniversary, SNSD released two songs, “Holiday” and “All Night” this week. Their promotion period for these two singles ends this week!

How should I describe these two music videos? Oh, I know! Glitter, glitter and more glitter. The girls are having fun and literally partying in both music videos. “Holiday” is more upbeat, bright and funky. It is meant as a nod to the early days of their career and celebrating their Holiday aka their 10 year debut anniversary.

“All Night” tends to have a more mature theme, with a funky melody that makes want to find to most flashy clothes and go out to party. SM Entertainment also released a documentary version of “All Night” where all the member talk about how special SNSD to them and what these 10 years meant for them.

Congratulations Girl’s Generation on your 10 year anniversary!

See you soon with a tribute post about Chester Bennington!

One Ok Rock Ambitions Tour 2017

Note: This is a super late post reviewing the One Ok Rock concert I attended on January 17th, my blogging schedule is lacking. I will work on creating a concrete schedule for posting blog posts on a regular basis, sorry about that everyone. However, I hope you still enjoy this post.

Where do I even begin when I talk about One Ok Rock, they are simply one of kind and on the rise of stardom. I discovered One Ok Rock back in 2014 while watching the live action of Rurouni Kenshin Movie. The first song I heard by them was “Mighty Long Fall”, I thought it was best song I’ve heard in a long time.

I attended their tour in 2015 and when I found out they were coming to Toronto again this year, I knew I had to go. The concert was held at Rebel Club in Toronto, there were many people coming to see them perform along with new and old fans. The venue is 45,000 square feet, there are two floors, however, the top floor seemed more spacious. The venue’s location is not the best, it was slightly hard to find. If the concert is held at the same venue when they come to Toronto again, plan ahead and leave earlier. The lineups moved fairly quickly thanks to the well trained staff.

The concert began with an opening act from the band, Cruisers, I have never heard of them before that night. Even though they were not well known, many people enjoyed their music and I did too.

I cannot recall exactly how many songs they performed, but I believe it was around 5-7. Cruisers exited the stage around 8pm and we were waiting approximately 35 minutes for the crew to set up their stage, and do sound check. The anticipation could be felt all throughout the venue, all of us could not wait to see our favorite band on stage. Eventually, they came out on stage opening with their song the show with, “Taking Off”. The song list for the concert is as follows:

  1. Ambitions (Introduction)
  2. Taking Off
  3. Take Me To The Top
  4. Deeper, Deeper
  5. Clock Strikes
  6. Decision
  7. Hard To Love
  8. Bedroom Warfare
  9. The Beginning
  10. I Was King
  11. Take What You Want
  12. We Are
  13. Mighty Long Fall

Taka (vocalist), Toru (guitarist), Ryota (bassist) and Tomoya (drummer) had so much energy, they knew how to make the audience excited to rock out to their music. I observed each member of the group and they performed with a passion, it was wonderful to see how much they love what they do for a living. One of the things that always impresses me about Taka is his vocal range and stamina. He sounded stable all throughout his songs, running and jumping around on stage. My favorite songs from the concert were “We Are”, “Taking Off”, “The Beginning” and “Mighty Long Fall”. However, I was strongly anticipating to hear “We Are”, I love the passion in Taka’s voice when he sing the lyrics talking about staying true to who you are and never giving up.

After seeing One Ok Rock performing twice, once in 2015 and again this year I can tell they seemed more comfortable and even more energetic to be on stage. They are growing their fanbase, and they are becoming even more prominent in the music world. I love their music because the melody, the lyrics and the way Taka sings touches my soul. It makes me feel encouraged, energetic and happy. Taka sings 100% live and in this day and age of auto-tune, it seems rare to see that. The price of the tickets were reasonable, and not overly expensive. However, that may not last for too long because they are become more and more popular.

They are making their U.S. debut and have already signed a contract with Fueled Ramen Records. I hope one day I get to see them perform on the Grammys 🙂

With that being said, I will conclude this concert review with sharing some live performances and music videos from One Ok Rock.

Thank you for reading and see you soon!

Goodbye Wonder Girls

When I first got into Kpop, thanks to PSY, I was searching for other Kpop artists and I discovered Kara and Wonder Girls. These two girls groups led me to finding out more amazing Kpop musicians.

This week I woke up to the news I didn’t want to read, Wonder Girls are officially disbanding. I’ve heard and read rumors about their so called disbandment, but I disregarded it because they had a successful comeback. Why would a group disband if they did well? It was upsetting to read the news, especially when I’ve been listening to their music since 2012. That’s a long time.

For those of you who haven’t heard Wonder Girls, they are a South Korean girl group who debuted in 2007 with their album “The Wonder Years”. The original members of the group were Sunmi, Sohee, Sunye, Yeeun and Hyuna. Hyuna was not part of the group for too long, due to problems with chronic gastroenteritis and fainting spells. However, Hyuna ended up being part of another popular Kpop band, 4 Minute which also disbanded last year. Following Hyuna’s exit, in autumn 2007, the talent agency Good Entertainment sent their trainee Yubin to JYP Entertainment to replace Hyuna. Yubin made her debut in their popular music video, “Tell Me”.

Wonder Girls have quite a legacy in South Korea, they are known as one of the top girl groups in the Kpop industry, along with other legendary groups. Wonder Girls had a tremendous success, very quickly they began to release chart topping hits like “Tell Me”, “So Hot” and “Nobody”. They were unstoppable and ready tot take over the world with their music. In 2009, it was announced they would go and try to breakthrough the US music market. They debuted with an English version of their song, “Nobody” and recording a new album. In that same year, JYP announced Wonder Girls will be joining the Jonas Brothers on tour. Considering their successful career, there have been a number of member lineup changes. In 2010, Sunmi postponed her music career to pursue her academic career, it was not certain when she would return to JYP again. Following her departure, Hyerim (Lim) a JYP trainee was chosen as Sunmi’s replacement. The group continued to promote their music, while actively working in South Korea and America.

Yenny, Sohee, Sunye, Yubin and Hyerim.

In 2012, Sunye announced she would be getting married in January 2013! JYP, the CEO of the JYP Entertainment announced the group would go on hiatus. Many fans feared the group will disband, but JYP reassured there was not such thing. On June 24, 2015, it was announced the Wonder Girls would be making a comeback as a band. Yet again, more lineup changes happened with Sunmi returning to the Wonder Girls and Sunye and Sohee ending their contracts with JYP Entertainment. On August 3 2015, they released their comeback album, “Reboot”. To this day this is one of my favorite albums by the Wonder Girls, with their 1980s inspired tunes. The girls took their talent one step further by learning to play an instrument, compose and write their own songs. “Reboot” was a successful album earning a number five spot of the Gaon Album Chart and number two on the Billboard World Albums. Following the success of the their previous album, the Wonder Girls released a new single, “Why So Lonely”, in the summer of 2016.

Final member lineup. Yenny, Yubin, Hyerim and Sunmi.

Now it is time to say goodbye! There are many questions as to why the group is disbanding, some have stated it is because JYP invests more time and money to promote newer groups. Yubin and Hyerim have renewed their contacts, while Sunmi and Yenny did not. According to some reports, Sunmi and Yenni are meeting with new agencies to continue working as musicians and hopefully continuing their activities as the Wonder Girls. It’s not certain how that would work out, considering they might be with different companies. Nevertheless, I know they will do what’s best for them and their career.

We are saying goodbye to ten wonderful years with the Wonder Girls, they have left behind wonderful music and memories. I may have not followed them from their debut days, but I am happy I got to know them before their disbandment. The girls will be releasing their final single on February 10.

Good luck and thank you for everything Wonder Girls, you were wonderful! We will miss you.
